Bug vacuums are actually a very effective device that is easy to understand and equally easy to use, so this handy contraption might be your  answer.

Bug vacuums are marketed as the alternative to using toxic sprays, powders, or smashing the critters.  The vacuum work in one of two ways depending on the unit you purchase. 

  1. Suck the bug in and kill it with electrification.
  2. Suck the bug in and store it to be released outside later.

Obviously, I like the second option better.  Bug are very effective little critters that feed the majority of the animals on the food chain.

Anyways either way you go with your vacuum. 

There are also toy bug vacuums available which will allow your kids to catch and see the insects around them without hurting them.  These options usually have clear plastic viewing areas which also work to magnify the bodies of the insects.  This can be a great way to learn some biology.
