The next few days, I am going to do research on the ingredients of my shampoo.  The main active ingredient is this Ammonium Laureth Sulfate.  This is a product proven to clean and add lather.

It is considered gentle and effective when rinsed off.  It is not intended for prolonged contact with the skin and it is recommended that a product not be made up of more than 1% of this ingredient.  Products that are rinsed off immediately, however, usually do contain more than this 1% concentration, like shampoos for example.

These are products that allow the oil and water based ingredients to mix acting as both a detergent and a surfactant.  There are usually two or more surfactants of these in a product because they need buffering.  They belong to a family of man made anionic surfactants which are used wide spread world wide in most beauty products, shampoos, and laundry detergents.

This product is not really good for your skin.  It will when rinsed off leave the area clean, but it will have taken the moisture from the top layers of the skin with it.  It can cause people with sensitive skin to have a flare of whatever there sensitivity is be it acne, eczema, psoriasis, or a chemical sensitivity.

Look at the label!!! Here is a guide to how gentle your shampoo is according to the surfactant used:
  • Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate - very, very, harsh
  • Ammonium Laureth Sulfate- very harsh but better than the above
  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate- better than the above, but still a little harsh
  • Sodium Laureth Sulfate-gentle, great pick!
  • TEA lauryl Sulfate-good pick
  • TEA Laureth Sulfate-good pick
