The Truth About Disposable Diapers…

Disposable diapers were once considered a luxury item.  Now they are almost a standard.  They consist of a pad of chemical crystals that can absorb 800 times there weight and help keep the liquid locked within them.  This chemical sheet is between two fabric like panels which are next to the skin.  These diapers can be worn longer without causing discomfort than cloth diapers.

It seems that all the diapers are competitively priced with only a few cents difference in price.  That one cent per diaper can be a huge amount of money when added over a year though. Consumer Reports reports that it could cost you about $144 per year for a one cent difference in price per diaper.

So, is it worth it for a slightly better leak protection, that is completely up to you. As the mother of a 2 year old, I am very aware that the worst possible thing to happen in a day is to have a diaper explode.  I think all brands do on occasion, but it is the brand named diapers that have been tested to do so less often.  It looks like Pampers Cruisers have came out slightly above Huggies Supreme in all the comparative reviews sites I looked at.

I think that this is a very personal decision though and I actually didn’t like Pampers because they seemed to cause my girl to get a rash more than the others.  Rashes were not a part of any of these tests, so you should watch this with your little one.

I also think that different body types fit different diapers better.  I have a tall skinny baby, she never really had that pudgy baby look.  I think this affected the way that diapers and everything else fit her.

So take your time, buy a package of all the brands and change until you find the one you like.  There is nothing wrong with changing brands and finding what is best for you and your baby.  Most of the generic brands came out with good results in the tests, so don’t be afraid to try them and see if they are what you are satisfied with, saving just one cent per diaper could be worth it or not.  I found that the Walmart brand White Cloud worked just fine when my girl was immobile.  Now, she is overly mobile and I have upgraded to the brand name Huggies.

Best of luck finding what works for you.
